![]() They carry on their secret conversations through screen windows and outside in the field. In the course of their borrowing, Arrietty is accidentally seen by a human boy, and they become friends after he leaves her a sugar cube with a tiny note. Sneaking through a hole in the wall, the little people stand on top of a cabinet and look out across the grand panorama of the room, before rappelling down the sheer “cliff.” When Arrietty’s dad takes her on a “borrowing” expedition, the film did a great job with the sense of scale, making their trek through the crawl space and walls of the house seem like an epic adventure. They spend their time avoiding menaces such as cats, crows, and above all else, being seen by the giant “human beans.” Borrowers are a race of miniature people who live in the baseboards of human houses and “borrow” small items for their needs: a pin, a sugar cube, a tissue, etc. Arrietty is a 14-year-old female Borrower who is active, adventurous, and curious about the world around her. The Arrietty movie takes place in a suburb of present-day Tokyo, Japan. The Disney movie defaults to the English dub, but the menu also includes the Japanese audio with optional English subtitles for those really want to immerse themselves in the setting. Both movies are essentially the same except for the voices. An American dubbed version was released by Walt Disney Pictures on February 17, 2012. The movie also won the Animation of the Year award at the 34th Japan Academy Prize award ceremony. Released in Japan on July 17, 2010, Arrietty was the highest grossing Japanese film for that year. The Arrietty movie is accompanied by a gorgeously haunting Celtic soundtrack from French singer/composer Cecile Corbel. The story is loosely based on The Borrowers, a 1952 children’s fantasy novel by English author Mary Norton. This feature-length anime, titled The Borrower Arrietty in Japan and The Secret World of Arrietty in North America, is a 2010 Japanese film scripted by Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli. ![]()
